At Nurtured Thoughts Psychology, our passionate team of specialist Autism psychologists at our Brisbane clinic helps people navigate life, overcome challenges, and develop healthy coping strategies.
Our psychologists, Andri Christoforou and Nzubechi Oguoma, are two fabulous experts in helping children, adolescents, and adults with autism.
We understand the complexities and challenges faced by those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other neurodivergent brains. These challenges can come from an array of factors: one common factor being the feeling of needing to “fit in” with society. These feelings and behaviours can cause other psychological problems. Autism is not something that's wrong, it's just a different way to think, feel, and connect with people.
The signs of autism are on a spectrum that consists of a range of early signs. It’s important to note that not every sign of autism will be present, but many can be.
Some signs can include avoiding eye contact, delayed speech or language development, difficulties in social interactions, very specific interests, lining up toys, difficulty with nonverbal communication, and more.
Our psychology services for individuals with autism across the lifespan are designed to acknowledge and celebrate differences, foster development, and facilitate meaningful participation in society. We are committed to offering the support and expertise required to enhance the lives of those with autism and their families where applicable.
Autism is a neurodiverse condition that influences how the brain processes information, resulting in a distinctive way of experiencing the world. The brain's networking system operates differently for those with autism, which affects communication, interaction, and how they respond to environmental changes. Their unique cognitive processing can lead to exceptional skills and a rich, individual perception of life, reminding us that variety in brain function is a natural and valuable aspect of human diversity.

Psychology Services for Autistic Adolescence
The Teen years can be especially challenging for those living with autism. Our psychologists can support them as much or as little as needed through this time. They specialise in helping autistic people understand and navigate academic pressures, social relationships, and the transition to adulthood.
Developing Independence & Life Skills
We support teens with autism in developing the strategies and skills to live life to the fullest, advocate for themselves where they need it, build up confidence in themselves, and thrive as who they are. Making home their safety zone allows them to be themselves and paves the way for healthy development.
Some strategies to implement at home include sticking to a regular schedule, rewarding good behaviour to reinforce it, and using consistent language (including nonverbal forms) that work well for them. By implementing some basic strategies, autistic teens can develop healthy ways to foster their development in and out of home environments. Our psychologists will develop plans tailored to your teens' needs and what works best for them.

Psychology Services for Children With Autism
We offer a nurturing environment where children can explore and grow. Through play therapy, behavioural techniques, and communication support, we provide a solid foundation for lifelong learning and development.
Family-Centred Approach
We recognise the importance of including families in the therapeutic process. Our services extend to providing guidance and training for parents and siblings, fostering an understanding home environment that supports the child’s growth and development. Early diagnosis is key to supporting autistic children and ensuring they get all the developmental tools they need to thrive.
Book your child with our psychologists for tailored guidance and support for their development in the most effective ways possible.

What is the most rewarding part of working with children and adolescents in therapy?
The most rewarding part of working with children and adolescents is witnessing their uniqueness, resilience, and dedication to reaching their full potential—while also appreciating their incredible sense of humour. I believe that every individual experiences life in their own unique way, and my goal is to understand their perspective, using evidence-based psychological interventions and my own life experiences to support them in achieving their therapy goals.

How do you help children and adolescents feel comfortable opening up during sessions?
I strive to make the therapeutic journey safe, comfortable, and enjoyable by incorporating play, humour, and authenticity. Drawing from evidence-based interventions, as well as skills I’ve learned from drama and improv classes, I create a space where children feel free to be themselves. By listening closely and engaging with what excites them, I ensure that sessions feel natural, interactive, and meaningful—always with a spark of humour too!
